"WHO'S READY FOR MORE PAIN"

Fishing Report 12-29-2011 Deep Jigging/Trolling

We finally got a 1 day weather window and headed off shore with my son David (in town for the holidays from Miami) and fishing pal Steve Conley. We started off jigging 1st thing looking for some Cobia and Grouper but only found a few small Jacks. Decided to switch over and try trolling for Wahoo. It did take long I was in the process of setting out the 3rd line when the medium flat line started screaming off drag. David grabbed the rod and landed a nice 40 lb Wahoo. It stayed wide open for the next hour and never got all 6 lines set before getting another strike. We had Wahoo, False Albes (6 at a time) and Black fin. The largest Wahoo 50 lbs hit the long rigger and melted off 300 yards while Steve watched. There is nothing like a Wahoo run while trolling. The wind picked up from the SW around 1:00 and the trolling bite slowed down. We moved in to 200 feet and started jigging. David hooked a small Jack that turned into a large shark. While we were battling the shark Steve landed a 32 lb and a 36 lb African back to back. Decided to head in when the winds picked up to 15 to 20 mph with 3 Nice Wahoo, Blackfin and 2 Africans. The fishing is still outstanding here when the weather allows.

Fishing Report Deep Jigging 11-20-2011

I had Kint, Michael, Tetsu and Winny come down from NY with Bookfishingtrips.com for 1 day of deep jigging. The ride out was a little bumpy due to the swell left from NE winds on Sat. We ran to the south looking for some AJs and 1st drift marked fish from the top to the bottom. There was no current and 1st drop was eaten on the way down which was the good news but the bad news was the sharks were everywhere and hungry. We hooked fish all day long and battled the sharks. I am not sure if it was due to the lack of current but no matter where we hooked fish the sharks found us. We did manage to land a couple good fish. Also Mike had a couple nice Yellow Mouth grouper and Kint landed a decent Black fin. I was trying to hook a fish for Winny and saw a school of Mantas go under the boat and 3 guesses what I foul hooked. Once it started trying to run I broke off the leader. Later in the day we had had enough of the sharks and went in shore for some grouper. We stopped and 45 miles and the 1st drift we had a nice Red Grouper and a 15 lb Gag. Also had a lot of Grunts/Sea Bass and Pinkys.

Fishing Report 11-12-2011

After another long wait for the weather to cooperate I had Wade Moore from NCCoastalFishing.com whom also does the outstanding job with my site and a couple pals Jay and Slick come to Wilimington for a trip. Started by filling the live well with live bluefish and pin fish headed out 20 miles looking for some grouper/kings. We only found a lot of sharks and cold green water. Moved off shore at 30 miles and after a few spots we finally found some nice Gags in between many, many sharks in the middle of the day. Jay caught and released a nice red Snapper in addition to a couple of AJs. Also caught and had to release many large sea bass. Never had a single king strike on the light lines only sharks.

Slick with his Gag Grouper      Jay with a nice red snapper, released for another day.

Fishing Report Deep Jigging 10-22-2011

I had Jon and a group of new anglers come down from NY with bookfishingtrips.com for 1 day of deep jigging. The 1st 20 miles had a NW swell/wind but once we got to 35 miles the ocean went flat with a great sunrise. Set up for the 1st drift and the current was very strong. It took a couple drifts but had a couple Almacos and then Luis hooked a big AJ but after a short battle the leader broke. Later in the morning found a active school fo small almacos and rudder fish. Moved to the south area and as usual in the middle of the day the big AJs came through but there was no stopping them. Jon has a Stella 20000 locked down with 175 leader and still took him into the rocks/bottom. The Black fin started chewing and we landed 9 nice tuna 10 to 15 lbs. Also the ever present sharks came calling and Luis landed a 300 lbers after a very long battle. Decided to move inshore late in the day but winds came up NE 20 plus and we were forced to run to Southport and come up the Cape Fear river to make it home. (I hate the weatherman this fall !!!!) Sorry I didn't get many pictures..

Fishing Report Deep Jigging 10-17-2011

We finally got a weather window and had the guys come down from NY fro 1 day of jigging. Had Kint, Frank, Joey, Al and Frank down with bookfising trips.com. As usual the weather was not as good as predicted but we made it out in SW 10 to 15 mph. Had to go to the north due to the sea conditions. The current was running south and the fish were not stacked on the edge of the break as usual. We caught some decent Almacos to start and then around 930 Kint hooked a monster. It screamed drag (Kint runs very heavy drag on a Stella 20000) and then put up a great a battle. Kint made pretty short work of the fish and it was in good shape. She was 66 inches long and 40 inch girth and weighed 115 lbs on my boat scale. Only 12 lbs off the state record so we released her unharmed and swam away fine. Al was next to hook a decent fish a respectable 60 lber. The current slowed around the middle of the day and the fish would not eat the jigs. We moved around to other areas and Frank caught a nice 30 lb African. We also had many Wahoo bits on the jigs but kept cutting off assist hooks on leader. Kint had his 400 gram Nagamasa shreaded a few time and saw a 50 lb Wahoo grab the jig next to the boat but missed the hooks. Went back to the deep later in the day and caught a few more jacks, a Yellow Trevalle and Blackfin. Although the action was not wide open we did catch a lot of species and a few great fish.

Fishing Report Deep Jigging 9-28-2011

I had Paul from Saltywater Tackle and Carlos from Brazil come to NC for 3 days of jigging but the weatherman had other ideas. We managed to get off shore 1 day running into a large SE swell. When we arrived the fish were eating with the AJs averaging 30 to 50 lbs. Carlos caught the fish of the day with a 44 lb Cobia. Paul also had a small Balckfin. We had 3 different Wahoo swim by the boat during the day but couldn't get them interested in anything. The sharks were present and a few AJs became lunch. The weather continues to be horrible every weekend with no end in site.

Fishing Report Deep Jigging 9-10-2011

I had Andrew/ Lourdes and Jimmy come down from NY for a day of jigging and they picked a great day. This was by far the best jigging day since the spring for total action. It was not stop every drift every drop for 8 1/2 hours. To be honest we lost count of the # of fish landed but well over 100 fish for 3 anglers. We had a mix bag of sizes from small fish to 50 inchers. The big fish showed up as usual in the middle of the day. Lourdes was the 1st to land a 53 inch fatty. Andrew had a 54 and a 53 inch fish. Lourdes finished the last drift with a 52 inch fish. Jimmy had a lot of quality 45 lb AJs and a 16 lb Gag. In addition to the AJs we had Almacos, Black fin, Scamp and Gag grouper. It was great to see this many fish of all sizes for the future. Andrew was bringing up a small AJ and the drag started screaming off the reel for 100 feet and stopped. He brought up the small AJ which had been swallowed by a bigger AJ but didn't get the hook. I wished we could have seen this one. The ocean went flat for the ride home and everyone crashed in the bean bags after a long day.

Fishing Report Deep Jigging 9-4-2011

Finally back on the water after a 6 week lay off due to a broken foot/cast/crutches. I had the guys come down from NY for 1 day of jigging Ray, George, John, Ben and Hing. The ocean was flat and ran 32 knots to the south. The water temps are still at 85 degrees and a little current. After a couple of drifts we got the AJs and Alamcos fired up. The sharks are still around and a few fish/jigs fell victim. The action was steady but not wide open. We moved around and George found the fish of the day over some rough bottom a 30 lb black belly Gag Grouper. This was a great fish on a jig this time of year. Also had 3 more Scamps/Yellow Mouth Grouper. A current time came by with some weeds and we started bailing the Mahi on top water. It was wide open bloody decks for a while and put 20 Mahis in the box for dinner. Continued working the jigs and found more nice Almacos. Later in the afternoon we finally had a quad hook up and landed Almacos/Albis and AJs. John landed a nice 12 lb Black fin on the last drift to add to the species list and the cooler. It felt good to be back on the water and looking forward to the fall season it won't be long before the big boys should start showing up.

Fishing Report 7-19-2011 Deep Jigging

I had a Steve and Danny in town from Kentucky for a 1st time jigging trip in NC. The ocean was nice with just a large east swell from the storm off shore. Started at a 18 mile wreck but only 1 AJ and too many sharks. Decide to run all the way to the break and it was worth the ride. 1st drop in 240 feet was an immediate hook up with nice Almacos. The action stayed steady with the Almacos for a while. Moved around a little trying to find the larger AJs but no big ones. The current was running 3 to 4 knots and the water temps were 88 degrees so I think they were being lazy. We did find some decent AJs later in the day. Also had 3 small Scamp grouper. Late in the afternoon they shutdown on the jigs so we ran inshore to a wreck and Danny landed the largest fish on the lightest rod a great battle.

Fishing Report 7-3-2011

Had Curtis Grant from Phoenix, AZ returned for more NC off shore fishing with Eric and Joel. Went to the Gulf Stream looking for Mahi. Started in 120 feet with flying fish everywhere. After a short period we had a small Mahi on the short flat line. Had good action in the morning with fish every 20 to 30 minutes. Joel caught the largest when a 20 Bull came in a crushed the short spreader bar set up. We trolled out to the deep to try out jigging for the Jacks. Joel caught a monster Almaco pushing 50 lbs. After a couple of triple headers the guys had enough and we went looking for some Grouper for dinner. Had 3 nice Scamps after a few drops on some inshore ledges. The afternoon bite slowed again (seems to be a pattern lately). The SW winds kicked up for the bumpy/wet ride home.

 Fishing Report July 1, 2011

Had Andrew and Lourdes come down from NY for a live bait trip for a day. Headed off shore with plenty of bait to feed the AJs. 1st drift Andrew landed and nice 10 lb Gag grouper for dinner. The AJs we not the wide open bite but we eventually got them fired up and had good action in the morning. Andrew/Lourdes were amazed at how hard these fish fight in the shallow water. Then at around noon again the switch was turned off and the bite shut off. We went jigging on some ledges and had a few small fish and short grouper. Also had a school of porpoise visit the boat.

Fishing Report 6-30-2011

Had a 3/4 day live bait trip with a family from Charlotte, NC. Caught plenty of live pogies in the dark and headed off shore 20 miles. It didn't take long and had the 1st double header of AJs. We continued to hand feed them bait next to the boat for the next hour until everyone had had enough pain. Tried slow trolling for kings but not luck. Went out to a ledge in 80 feet and tried for grouper but only found sharks. I ocean seemed to shutdown after lunch. Ended the day with a few kings strikes but couldn't keep them hooked. Sorry for got the camera again.

Fishing Report 6-25-2011 through 6-27-2011

I had Gustavo and Roberto return to NC from Brazil for 4 days of fishing. The weather man was not kind and we canceled the 1st day. Day #2 we took our time in 4 foot seas and started around 20 miles. We had AJs on live bait all day until late in the afternoon when they shutdown. The guys kept count ( I was too busy unhooking fish) and we landed 50 fish between 25 and 50 lbs. Day #3 headed off shore to some deep wrecks in 110 feet. No action at the 1st wreck and moved out to 120 feet. Finally started getting some fish but small AJs. Roberto landed a nice 15 lb king. Decided to try a inshore a few miles and finally the wind let off and the ocean went flat. After a couple of drifts we decided to through a popper and it didn't take long when it hit the water 100 AJs followed it to the boat and it was on for 4 hours. To be honest it was impossible to keep track on how many fish we landed but 1 drift was 1 1/2 miles with non stop action. The guys got so tried of fighting fish we took the hooks off the poppers just to watch them hit the plug on top. Sorry I didn't get a lot of good photos for obvious reasons. The last day was a short day since the guys had a late afternoon flight. Caught plenty of fish on live bait but the ocean was too rough for poppers. Also landed a couple nice Gags on live bait. The high light was a 8 foot Hammerhead shark eating a 30 lb AJ. The was a site to see. The guys took some great videos and I hope to see them in a couple weeks once they get home and post them on U-tube.

Fishing Report Gulf Stream 6-4-2011

Had Dale, Sean, John and Don back for a Gulf Stream trolling trip. The ride out was OK with a east swell/wind. Started in shallow in 135 feet and only had Cuda action. Later in the morning found a large area of matted weeds and did some drifting with spinning tackle and landed a couple small Mahi. Ran off shore to 850 feet after hearing a current edge was forming on the radio. There was a beautiful current line with weeds and it didn't take long before the 1st reel started screaming. Sean caught the 1st nice Bull. The action was not wide open but steady with all quality fish. In addition, caught some nice fish on the spinning tackle when a school followed one of the big Bulls to the boat. Ended up with 10 Mahi and 6 of them over 20 lbs with the largest close to 30 lbs.

Fishing Report 5-29-2011 Day #2

The ocean was much nicer on day #2. Started in 200 feet looking for Mahi and grouper but no takers. Went to the deep water and 1st drift a quad hook up. The action stayed outstanding all morning with large Almacos and some decent AJs. Later in the day Ty finally landed a fat Red grouper. Andrew seemed to have the action down today with multiple larger fish all day long. Amazing 2 days and never saw the 1st Mahi at the break. I was a great 2 days of jigging and everyone enjoyed the nice ride home.

Fishing Report Deep Jigging 5-28-2011 Day #1

Had Jimmy, Andrew, Lourdes and Ty down for 2 days of jigging for AJs. Day #1 was a rough ride out due to a large east swell but the fishing was worth the long ride. Andrew dropped 1st and 10 seconds he was on with everyone else to follow. The action was steady all afternoon with many multiple hook ups. Later in the day the larger fish ate with some nice 50 inch fish. After everyone was tied of AJs went inshore to try for a grouper but no luck. Lourdes had a largest fish of the day of course.

Fishing Report Deep Jigging 5-21-2011

I had Ray, Milton, Ben, Evan and Gary come down from NY for a couple days of jigging/top water. The weatherman was kind and ran to the south and 30 plus knots. Ray was the 1st to drop and 3 jigs and he was on with a fat Almaco. The action was great all morning. We had a couple run ins with a pack of sharks and landed a couple 250 lbers. Later in the day the larger AJs decided to show up and and landed nice fish in the 55 to 70 lb range. Ray had the largest of the day 48 inches. Milton, caught 3 Mahi and we also had a couple Black fin. Evan added a 12 lb Scamp to the list on the last drift. Everyone crashed in the bean bags for the ride home.

Fishing Report Deep Jigging 5-2-2011 Day #3

We tried to get off shore yesterday but the weather man had other ideas with a strong east wind. Made it 18 miles and tried around the wrecks but not takers. Day #3 what a difference a day makes ran 30 knots plus all the way to the south and it didn't take long. The Black fin were chewing with Alamcos, Big False Albes aand AJs. The Mahi also showed up. Sami had a giant 30 lb Bull on Captain Rick's boat and we had 3 others all on top water. The Black fin also were hitting on top water. Then at around 11;30 we had our shot and the big AJs with a double hook up. We knew immediately these were the giants. Unfortunately one other them broke the leader but we landed a 60 inch long x 34 inch girth AJ. According to the scale she weighed 95 lbs. We revived her and she swam away strong. This was the largest in 2011 and no doubt more to come. We ended the day like we started with everyone hooked up. Everyone enjoyed the flat ride in sleeping in the bean bags.

Fishing Report Deep Jigging 4-30-2011 Day #1

Sami from SaltywaterTackle.com and Mogi with 5 anglers flew into NY and drove to NC for 4 days of jigging with myself and Captain Ric Croson. Day #1 had a slight NW wind but a nice rode out. Started in 140 feet and found a few kings and Almacos. Moved out to 200 feet and found the Wahoo ready to eat. We landed 2 nice fish 15 lbs and 25 lbs and lost a few more due to bite offs. Then the small AJs started chewing as fast as you dropped a jig. What they lacked in size they made up for with quantity. Had great action for a while. Then moved out to the deep and found Blackfin tuna. Landed 3 nice fish before the shutdown. Finally found some decent AJs but had to work for them. A good day with Wahoo, Blackfin, AJs, Almacos, Kings. Stay tuned for Day #2.

Fishing Report 4-24-2011 Gulf Stream

I had Mike and his son Joel on a combo trip for Joel's 21st birthday. Started jigging in 140 feet but no current and very little action. Changed over and started trolling and it didn't take long to hearing drags screaming with Black fin and other species. Mike landed a nice Wahoo and then a double header of tuna. Trolled out to the deep in the middle of the day and found too many False Albes. Started jigging in the deep and Mike landed his 1st large AJ on jig. We had plenty of action with Almacos and AJs. Finished the day trolling with constant action. Had a Sail in the baits but couldn't get a hook in her. Joel finished the day with a fat 20 lb Black fin.

Fishing Report Deep Jigging 4-20-2011 Day #3

I knew the weatherman would finally get it wrong headed out in a large SE swell and the winds picked up with the sun. We made it out but it was painful and it didn't take long. Gustavo quickly hooked and nice 25 lb Wahoo on a jig but it through the hook just out of gaff range. The AJs were a little picky but larger and the guys landed a few in the morning while they were eating. Moved out to 200 feet and Roberto landed a small Wahoo and we lost another at the boat. Continued to catch a few AJs and Almacos. Also released another large Gag (May 1st is coming soon). Tried to make a few drifts in the deep but the fish shutdown and the wind picked up so we made the long wet ride home.

Fishing Report Deep Jigging 4-19-2011 Day #2

Another nice weather day with light SW winds, started fishing by 7:30. The fish had lock jaw until the current started running a little and then pretty good action on the AJs, Almacos and Kings. Couldn't find any Africans today. Gustavo landed a giant Gag grouper released to fight another day. Decided to try the deep and found some nice AJs ready to eat. Also loaded with smaller AJs and Alamcos. One turned into lunch next to the boat and Gustavo hooked a 250 lb shark and we got a few good pictures.

Fishing Report Deep Jigging 4-18-2011 Day #1

I have the pleasure of having Roberto and Gustavo who traveled all the way from Brazil to experience the NC jigging fishery. Finally got a break on the weather and headed off shore in flat seas. Roberto asked me about one of my previous reports stating we had 100 AJs in a day and it was hard to believe until we made our 1st couple drifts and the guys were believers. The morning bite was outstanding with AJs, Almacos, Africans, Grouper, False Albacore and Kings. Gustavo had 3 giant Africans all in the mid 30 lb range. The guys fished hard all morning. Early afternoon things showed down a little but found a nice Black fin in the deep with some large Almacos. More to come tomorrow.

Fishing Report Deep Jigging 4-9-2011

Day #2 .  We headed south to try a different area. It was a long ride into the swell and then the weatherman had a surprise with still NE wind with 5 miles to go. Set up for the 1st drift and 4 angler on with small AJs. We had decent action between the AJs, Almacos, False Albacore and Banded Rudder fish. Then the sharks showed up and decided to have breakfast. We tried several areas but no AJs. Later in the morning the fish finally decide to eat and had a double header of Black fin and Jacks. The rest of the day we had great action with a mix of 250 to 300 lb sharks. The guys fought at least 10 to the boat along with all the other species. The weather continued to build and with 6 nice Black fin in the box for dinner we called it a day. Sorry no pictures from day #2,  I left the camera at home.

Fishing Report Deep Jigging 4-8-2011

Day 1.   Had Joey, Tetsu, Al, Joey and Dom down from NY with bookfishingtrips.com for 2 day of deep water jigging. Day #1 went to the north and started in 200 feet looking for the early tuna bite. It didn't take long 1st drift and Joey had a nice 15 lb Black fin. Continued catching and mix of AJs, Almaco, False Albacore and a few Black fin. Then we saw the tuna chasing flyers on top. This is a spectacular site. There were a few 60 lb Yellow fin mixed in with the Black fin. Dom caught his 1st Black fin on top water. Things slowed later in the morning so moved inshore a little. Tetsu caught and 25 lb African and Joey had a 50 lb AJ. The middle of the day the fish took a break and we tried several areas with slow action. Moved south a few mile and fished in 350 feet and final found some fish. We had constant action with Almacos. AJs, grouper (all released) and Black fin. Joey hooked a very large AJ at the end of the day but broke off.

Fishing Report Deep Jigging 3-26-2011

Had Jimmy, Andrew and 2 new anglers Nick and George down from NY with www.bookfishingtrips.com for a great day for jigging. The weather window looks like 1 day so we made the best of it and left very early and came back late. Started in 280 feet for tuna at 1st light but not much action. Decided to move inshore a little and found the AJs hungry and mean as usual. Nick and George found out quickly how much they pulled. Worked hard all day and had constant action. Finally, found the Cobia in the afternoon and did outstanding with 7 fish between 20 and 55 lbs. Andrew caught the largest at 55 lbs. Jimmy also had the touch and caught a couple nice 40 lbers. At the end of the day we caught 2 giant Africans. Jimmy had a 36 lber and Nick a 35 lber to finishing the long day. The winds picked up hard NE for the ride in but an outstanding day of fishing.

Fishing Report Deep Jigging 3-19-2011 Day #2

Day #2 we left early since the wind was supposed to start blowing hard later in the day. Still had a stiff SW wind for the ride out but made it no problem. The AJs were very tough and seemed to be shutdown in the morning but the guys worked hard. Frank #2 landed a giant Jack Crevalle to start the day. Then Frank #1 landed his 1st of 3 nice Africans (30 lber and 2 31 lbers). Ken also caught his 1st African a 34 lbers. We picked at the AJs and the Almacos all morning. Then the Kings showed up and stole a lot of jigs. Frank did land a 12 lb ling before he bit through the leader. John continued with the Cobia touch and landed another 25 lb fish. The wind picked up and it felt like we were fishing in a washing machine with the white caps so we called it a day with plenty of fish in the box.

Fishing Report Deep Jigging 3-18-2011 Day #1

Had Ken, Frank, John and Frank #2 come down for 2 days of jigging from www.bookfishingtrips.com. It was great to have 3 brand new anglers to NC who have heard the stories about the jigging but were non-believers. It didn't take long 1st drift and 1st drop and Frank was on and others followed quickly. The AJs were no the monsters but made up for it with attitude. We had constant action and with in 1 hour the guys couldn't believe they had only been fishing for 1 hour. John had the Cobia touch landed his 1st Cobia which weighed 56 lbs. He also caught another 20 lber. The Barracudas were tough on the tackle taking a lot of jigs. The afternoon bite was outstanding with multiple hook ups every drift until the guys were done.

Fishing Report Deep Jigging 2-27-2011

Jon, Peter, Joey, Basil and George came down from BookFishingTrips.com for the 1st trip of 2011 and it was not a disappointment. The 1st couple drifts landed and released 2 fat gag grouper. Then we found the AJs. Joey landed the 1st 50 inch fish but  Peter would not be out done and landed a 57 inch x 34 inch big girl. We also landed 2 White Trevally, another species on the jigs. Had constant action all day with the AJs and Almacos. Later in the day finally found the 1st African Pompano of 2011 with a nice double header. Jon had a 36 lber and Basil a 30 lber. The AJs started eating  in the afternoon and then Joey finished the last drift with a 40 lb African. This was a great start for the 2011 season for the guys. It has been a long winter in NY and looking forward to the spring fishing.

Fishing Report Deep Jigging 2-24-2011

I had Atif Awan in town for business and wanted to experience NC deep jigging. The weatherman gave us a great window and we started the 1st drift by 7:30. It only took a few seconds and Atif was on his 1st AJ from NC. After a couple hours of constant action we decided to take a break and move off shore for tuna. The tuna bite was slow but managed a nice Blackfin and a few Bonita's. Moved back into 140 feet in the afternoon and caught AJs, Almacos and grouper. We did have a huge Cobia follow a AJs to the boat but couldn't get her to eat.

Fishing Report Deep Jigging 2-17-2011

Finally, got a 1 day weather window and had to take advantage so we headed off shore with the guys. Rob, Chris, Carlton and Dave. Stopped at 140 feet and it didn't take long the AJs were hungry and very mean in the cooler water. The action was none stop and as many multiple hook ups as you wanted just drop. We had some nice fish I boated a 54 inch fatty but Chris took the large fish pool with a 58 inch length x 36 inch girth. She was very heavy. After everyone had enough pain we moved off shore looking for some Black fin. No tuna but we had a Wahoo bite and threw the hook close to the boat. After more Almacos and AJs moved back in shore and finally found a couple nice Cobia 48 lbs and 40 lbs. Also released 6 nice grouper during the day. A great day on the water in NC released a minimum of 85 AJs and everyone complained about very sore arms including the captain.

follows me lately) it was also cloudy to add to the mix. As usual Joe came through and we were able to land 5 nice fish averaging 6 to 8 lbs. Of course David had to show me how it is done and caught a 10 1/2 lb x 28 1/2 inch stud of a bone. If you want to catch some large bones and have a great day around Miami I would highly recommend you give Joe a call at 305-798-0841 0r 305-642-6727. I have fished with him for over 18 years and he had never disappointed.

I also attached a couple of pictures of us feedinthe keys.
